Making a Difference

Thank you for volunteering your time and talents with the students at Alpine District Schools! We value family and community engagement in schools and believe that volunteer involvement can have a positive impact on a child’s education.

Each school has varying needs, ranging from advocacy/advisory support, instructional support, or support services.  Please contact your school directly to find out how you can make a difference.

Required Background Clearance

While encouraging family and community participation, we must consider the safety of every child in the district. State law (53G-11-402) requires fingerprinting and a background check from volunteers before participating in any volunteer activity at any ASD school.

Fingerprinting and Background Check Process

Each volunteer must submit to fingerprinting and an ongoing background check and obtain clearance to be able to volunteer in any capacity in our schools. To schedule an appointment for fingerprinting, please visit www.alpineschools.org/fingerprinting. Once you have been fingerprinted, the clearance process can take up to 7-10 days. Please keep this timeline in mind as you plan volunteer opportunities. This process cannot be expedited. Your clearance will then be recorded and visible to any school in the district. To verify clearance, please contact the school with which you wish to volunteer. Fingerprinting for Alpine District is located at the Alpine District Office, 575 North 100 East, American Fork.

Visitors and Guests

Background clearances are not required for visitors or guests who enter a school for a one-time event. Guests and visitors shall have no unsupervised exposure or contact with students and they must be in the line of sight of an ASD employee at all times. Visitors who exceed two visits each month or visit schools for the intent of supporting district goals should become volunteers and complete a background check and volunteer application.

Example of ways in which schools welcome visitors or guests may include such events as:

  • guest/resource speakers

  • one-time appearance for school or classroom event like a literacy day, play or presentation

  • parents and family members who attend school to eat lunch

  • visitors for a one-time family involvement activity with their student

  • parents dropping off items for their student at the school

  • vendors make a delivery to a school

  • parent-teacher conferences or student meetings

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do I need to have fingerprinting and a background check done? Are these “Lifetime Prints”?

  •  Background checks are on a rapback system and are ongoing. ASD will be notified of any changes or new charges on any records held in our system. Because of this, fingerprinting is required only 1 time and will be retained for the duration of your activity in our schools.

Will I be notified when I have been cleared?

  • No. The results of your background check will be shared with the school upon clearing. You will be notified if further reconciliation is required to achieve clearance.

Can I transfer my fingerprints from another organization or school district?

  • It is possible to have your fingerprinting records transferred or “cloned” from another school or district to ASD. Contact the district or school where fingerprints originated to verify that they are transferrable and active. Obtain the transfer form from that location and bring it to the Fingerprinting Office at the Alpine District Office.

I already have a background check with another organization, can I use it for volunteering at my child’s school?

  • We cannot use a background check from any other organization unless it is transferrable, is on a current and active rapback system, and was for NCPA/VCA (National Child Protection Act/Volunteers for Children Act) uses.

How do I know if my fingerprints are still valid?

  • If you have had fingerprinting at the Alpine District Office and are uncertain if they are still valid, please call our office to verify. 801-610-8586

I am a teacher in Alpine School District or another school district, do I need to be fingerprinted again to volunteer?

  • We can most likely clone your records from USBE (Utah State Board of Education) to ASD for volunteering purposes. We do not charge for this service if you are a current teacher for ASD or have retired with ASD.

How much does fingerprinting cost?

  • The cost $35. We accept cash, credit/debit cards, tap to pay and checks.

Is financial assistance available to cover the cost of fingerprinting?

  • If completing a background check for ASD is a financial burden, please visit with your school to inquire about financial assistance options.

What are the business hours for the fingerprinting office?

  • The Fingerprinting Office is open Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm. We encourage volunteers to make use of summer hours as well, Mon-Fri, 9am-3pm.
