Demonstrated Competency Assessments

Alpine School District provides students in grades 9-12 with the opportunity to earn original/first time credit by demonstrating competency within the discipline. The Demonstrated Competency Assessment model assumes the student already possesses the knowledge and skills associated with the course they are interested in “testing out” of. Therefore, the assessment does not contain any instructional components and is deliberately designed to assess the student’s knowledge of the subject and her/his ability to use the content knowledge to effectively perform authentic tasks associated with this subject.

Please read carefully the following important points:
  • DCA’s are not for credit recovery purposes and will not be administered for this purpose.
  • Assessments vary in their length, duration, and process according to the required competencies to be demonstrated. Therefore, some assessments require multiple appointments, while some require that the student take the assessment home to be completed over a sustained period time. This allows students appropriate time and conditions to demonstrate the required competencies being assessed in the course.
  • A non-refundable test fee of $20 applies to the World Language exams, all others are free.
  • No study guides or practice assessments will be provided in preparation for the assessment.
  • Each assessment may be taken only once per year, per subject tested
  • Students may sign up for a maximum of 2 assessments per testing date.
  • ASD uses a “P ” grade mark to indicate if credit was earned.  Letter grades are not awarded.
  • Transcript will indicate that the credit was earned through the DCA assessment.

Be advised:
  • Credit earned through the Demonstrated Competency Assessment program is accepted by public and charter schools within the State of Utah, as supported by state law.
  • The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) does NOT recognize courses completed through credit-by-exam and will NOT be accepted to meet NCAA eligibility; therefore, students pursuing a college athletic career should not take a DCA.
  • Students pursuing the scholarships are responsible to contact the scholarship office to determine if DCAs will meet the scholarship qualifications.
