This week is Teacher Appreciation Week. We want to give a big thanks for all of the great things the teachers in our district do. Below is a poem by Asher Kishpaugh for his teacher (and grandma) Bonnie Sulz. This can also be an ode for all the other teachers out there.

Ode to Mrs. Sulz
By Asher Kishpaugh
May 1, 2012

Oh, Mrs. Sulz what is there to say?
You nourish our lives in many a way.

I’m grateful for spelling and math and poetry,
But mostly for your caring so effortlessly.
Every student you teach is special to you
You love us, and it show is all that you do.

When we get our passports, you cheer out loud.
When we memorize poems, you make us feel proud.
And when it’s our birthday, we’re on the 9th cloud!

I’ve learned about fractions, and decimals galore
So many, in fact, I wish for NO more!

I’ve learned how important reading can be.
Even more so how reading can benefit me!

You’ve taught self respect with “Mr.” and “Miss”
But becoming a “Sir” I will never forget.

Your knee gave you trouble, but never your heart
So, knock on some wood as my journey embarks.

Seventh grade sounds frightful, sometimes I’m scared,
But with you for sixth grade, I’m more than prepared!

You have taught me the basics, this much is true.
“Oh say can you see,” there’s NO ONE like you!
Most importantly I’ve learned, there’s nothing I
CAN’T do!!

National School Nurse Day

Wednesday, May 9, 2012

“Advocacy, Access, Achievement: Making the Connection”

The National Association of School Nurses, Inc. (NASN) has chosen May 9, 2012 as National School Nurse Day. National School Nurse Day was established in 1972 to foster a better understanding of the role of school nurses in the educational setting. Today, school nursing is recognized as a specialized practice that advances the well-being, academic success, and life-long achievement of students. To this end, over 76,000 school nurses across the country promote health and safety; intervene with actual and potential health problems; provide case management services; and actively collaborate with others to build student/family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy, and learning.

National School Nurse Day falls on the Wednesday during National Nurses Week, May 6 – 12, ending on the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of nursing. Schools and communities are encouraged to show appreciation to their school nurses in celebrating this important day.

For more information on National School Nurse Day, visit the NASN Web site at www.nasn.org. Visit the Utah School Nurse Association Web site at utahschoolnurses.org for local information and information about Utah school nurses.

The Timpanogos High School administration would like to acknowledge and recognize the social studies team at their school for their exemplary work as a high performing professional learning community. They portray in every sense of the phrase, “A Community of One Striving for Excellence.” As you walk through their team hallway, it is clear that EXCELLENCE is their pursuit!

Arlene Herrick, Doug Olson, Donnalee Eisenhart, Tricia Bray, and Paul Barth are tremendous educators. Led by an experienced thirty-seven year veteran, they individually and collectively reflect a problem-solving body. Student learning, and a quest for continuous improvement guide their decisions and actions.

It is apparent that in addition to incredible talent, their spirit of unity, camaraderie, professionalism, trust, and synergism is absolute. Their team characteristics and qualities will consequently, translate into continuous improvement, and eventually higher levels of learning for all students. As we would say at Timpanogos, their team typifies a “healthy culture.”

They have made great strides to reevaluate and collectively identify enduring power standards that serve as overarching “big ideas” for United States History units of instruction. Within each standard, they are creating key learning targets that are aimed to reflect student mastery of each standard. Their efforts will result in a deeper knowledge and understanding of U.S. History. Additionally they are working to create a common pacing guide for each unit, a method or approach for students to track their learning, common formative assessments, and a common summative assessment. Finally, they plan to monitor formative and summative assessment results so they can adjust instruction and identify students needing additional support. They will continue their work this summer as they assemble together for hopefully six days to further their efforts to improve student learning.

We are grateful for their examples and leadership.
