Dual Immersion

What is Immersion?

Dual Language Immersion is a way for students to learn academic content while acquiring another language at the same time. Students receive math, science, and a variety of instruction in a target language. The teaching strategies used help to develop literacy skills in both English and the world language while attaining academic achievement. Schools follow the Utah Dual Language Immersion model: 50% percent of the school day is taught in English and the other 50% of the school day students are immersed in the target language. Teachers of the target language are native or fluent speakers. The program extends from K-12th grades, with the university-level coursework offered in grades 10-12. Program Mission · Maximize students’ second language proficiency · Provide a rich academic environment · Develop students’ abilities to work successfully in multi-cultural settings · Offer a rich, culturally diverse experience for the entire school community.

Our Immersion Options

Portuguese

The Alpine Portuguese DLI Program began in 2012- 2013. The model offers students the opportunity to become skilled in Portuguese and gain increased cultural competency. With over 220 million speakers, Portuguese is the seventh most widely spoken language in the world. Portuguese is a good springboard to learning other Romance languages. Students who speak Portuguese can generally understand and learn Spanish with little difficulty. Similarly, Spanish -speaking students thrive in Portuguese immersion classrooms. Utah boasts a large Portuguese-speaking community composed of native Brazilians and other Utah residents that have lived in over 35 Portuguese-speaking countries around the world.

Additional Information

Chinese

Chinese is the most widely spoken first language in the world. China is heir to a very rich and ancient culture. Today it is the home of the world’s second largest economy. China’s political, economic, and cultural impacts will be significant for generations to come. Beginning in 2010, Alpine’s Chinese Immersion program gives students the opportunity to be immersed in the Chinese language and culture with native Chinese speaking teachers. The program is aligned with the Utah’s Chinese DLI state model.

Spanish

More than 50% of modern day-English words originate in Spanish. This means that students quickly acquire the Spanish language. With some 400 million Spanish speakers, it is the fourth most commonly spoken language worldwide. Students in the Spanish DLI program have been immersed in the Spanish language and culture since 1978. As the program has grown to encompass four schools, students have many opportunities to take advantage of practicing their Spanish with native Spanish speaking teachers and peers. Spanish Immersion increases cognitive abilities for native English and Spanish speakers.

French

More than 220 million people speak French on the five continents. French is the second most widely learned foreign language after English, and the sixth most widely spoken language in the world. French is also the only language, alongside English, that is taught in every country in the world. France operates the biggest international network of cultural institutes, which run French-language courses for close on a million learners. The ability to speak French and English is an advantage on the international job market. A knowledge of French opens the doors of French companies in France and other French-speaking parts of the world (Canada, Switzerland, Belgium, and the continent of Africa). As the world’s fifth biggest economy and third-ranking destination for foreign investment, France is a key economic partner.
